Reuse an Edited File in Another Tool: Recent Files

Edit a file once, then use the result as the input of the next tool. No re-upload, no download-and-browse.

Most data jobs have more than one step. You convert an Excel file to CSV, clean it, mask the personal columns, and then compare it with last month. Normally each step means saving a file to your computer and finding it again in the next tool.

Recent files removes that. When you download a result from Data Utility, a copy is kept in your browser and listed under Recent files at the top of the left sidebar. You can also click Save for other tools to keep a copy without downloading.

To reuse a file, open its menu in the sidebar and choose the tool, or pick it from the Recent files list above the input of any tool. It works in Format Converter, SQL Generator, Data Formatter, Data Profiler, Data Comparison, Data Masking, Chat with Data, Data Dictionary and Data README.

The copy stays on your device. It is stored in your browser, not on a server, so nothing is uploaded. It holds up to 10 files of up to 100,000 rows each, and you can delete one file or clear them all at any time. Clearing your browser data also removes them.

Frequently asked questions

How big can a file be?

It depends on your device. A few hundred MB usually works.

Which conversions does the Format Converter support?

Any direction between JSON, CSV, Parquet and Excel (.xlsx), for one file or a whole folder. Nested JSON is flattened into columns such as address.city. For Excel, the first sheet is read; old .xls files are not supported.

Why did my number or date change after converting?

Types are detected from the values. Turn off "Detect types" to keep everything as text, which also keeps leading zeros in IDs and phone numbers.

Tip: Use Delete or Clear all in the sidebar when you finish with sensitive files on a shared computer.
