VLOOKUP Alternative: Join Two CSV or Excel Files Online
VLOOKUP works, but it is slow on big files and breaks easily. A join does the same job in a few clicks.
VLOOKUP looks up a value in one table and returns a matching value from another. It is useful, but it has well-known problems. It only looks to the right, it breaks when columns move, it is slow on large files, and one stray space in a key gives a #N/A error.
A join does the same job in a cleaner way. You pick a key column in each file, such as an id, an email or a SKU, and the tool adds the matching columns from the second file to every row of the first. There are no formulas to copy down, and the result is a normal file you can download as CSV, Excel, JSON or Parquet.
In Data Utility, load your first file, load the second file, and add a Join step. Choose Only matching rows if you want an inner join, or All rows of the first file if you want every original row kept, with empty cells where there is no match. Keys are compared ignoring capital letters and extra spaces, which removes the most common reason a lookup fails.
If your keys still do not match, add a Trim spaces step before the join. Your files stay in your browser, and the join is recorded in Data Lineage so you can show how the file was built.

Frequently asked questions
Which transformations are available?
Join with a second file (inner, left, right, full), trim spaces, concatenate columns, change case, find and replace, split a column, rename, remove columns, filter rows, remove duplicates, sort and fill empty cells.
Can I run several steps?
Yes. Steps run from top to bottom and each one sees the result of the one before. You can reorder or remove them.
Can I join two files or combine columns?
Yes. Data Transformation lets you join two CSV or Excel files on a key (inner, left, right or full), and trim spaces, concatenate columns, change case, find and replace, split, rename, filter, sort, remove duplicates and fill empty cells. You choose the steps, check the result and download it. Your files stay in your browser.
Can I change the date format of a column?
Yes. Add a Change date format step, pick the column and the new format, such as 2026-03-09, 09/03/2026 or March 9, 2026. It reads many layouts, Excel date numbers and unix timestamps, and can also give only the year, month, weekday or quarter. If 03/04/2026 is unclear, you choose day first or month first.
Tip: Use a left join to see which rows found no match. Their new columns are empty.
