How to use the File Size Calculator: CSV, JSON, Excel, Parquet

Convert JSON, CSV, Parquet and Excel – one file or a whole folder.

The Format Converter moves data between JSON, CSV, Parquet and Excel without code or an install. It reads your file in the browser, flattens nested JSON into columns, keeps or guesses column types, and writes the format you choose. Use it to open API data in Excel, load a spreadsheet into an app, shrink a big CSV into Parquet, or look inside a Parquet file. Nothing is uploaded, so it is safe for customer and business data.

Frequently asked questions

How does the file size calculator work?

It writes your table in every format inside your browser and shows the real size, the size after gzip and the time it took. Nothing is estimated and nothing is uploaded.

Which format is smallest?

In our 100,000-row test Parquet was smallest at 1.84 MB, then Excel at 4.41 MB, CSV at 6.87 MB and JSON at 14.76 MB. Results depend on your data.

How big can a file be?

It depends on your device. A few hundred MB usually works.

Which conversions does the Format Converter support?

Any direction between JSON, CSV, Parquet and Excel (.xlsx), for one file or a whole folder. Nested JSON is flattened into columns such as address.city. For Excel, the first sheet is read; old .xls files are not supported.

Why did my number or date change after converting?

Types are detected from the values. Turn off "Detect types" to keep everything as text, which also keeps leading zeros in IDs and phone numbers.
