How to Compress JSON, CSV, XML, YAML and Parquet Files
Make big data files small enough to email, store and move. Compress with gzip in your browser, no upload needed.
Text data files are large. A CSV or JSON export can be hundreds of megabytes, which is slow to send and costly to store. The good news is that text compresses very well.
The File Compressor turns any file into a gzip (.gz) file. CSV, JSON, XML and YAML often become 70 to 90 percent smaller. Parquet is already compressed, so it shrinks less. You can drop many files at once and see the size before and after for each one.
It also works the other way. Drop a .gz file on the Decompress tab to get the original file back. Your files stay in your browser the whole time.
How to use the File Compressor: step by step
- Open the File Compressor.
- Choose Compress or Decompress.
- Drop one or more files into the box.
- Check the new size, then download each .gz file.
When to use the File Compressor
- Emailing a large CSV
- Shrinking JSON logs before archiving
- Saving cloud storage cost
- Opening a .gz export without extra software
Tip: Most tools read .gz directly. For example, pandas, Spark, DuckDB and BigQuery can load a .csv.gz file as it is.
