How to Open a CSV File Without Excel (Free, No Install)

Your teacher shared a CSV file and Excel is not installed. You can still open it in a minute, for free.

Open the Format Converter

A CSV file is plain text: rows of values separated by commas. That is why many programs can open it, and why you do not need to pay for Excel. A college computer, a borrowed laptop or a phone is enough.

The quickest way is to open it in your browser. Use the Format Converter, drop the CSV file and click Convert to Excel (or to JSON if you need that). The file is read on your own device and is never uploaded, so it is safe for assignment data and personal records.

You can also use free apps you may already have. Google Sheets opens CSV through File, then Import. LibreOffice Calc is a free download that behaves like Excel. On Windows, Notepad shows the raw text, which is fine for a small file but hard to read for a big one.

If the columns look jumbled, the file probably uses a semicolon or tab instead of a comma. Choose the right separator when importing. If names look like strange symbols, the file is saved in a different text encoding, so try UTF-8.

Keep a copy of the original and save your work as a new file, so you can always go back.

Frequently asked questions

How big can a file be?

It depends on your device. A few hundred MB usually works.

Which conversions does the Format Converter support?

Any direction between JSON, CSV, Parquet and Excel (.xlsx), for one file or a whole folder. Nested JSON is flattened into columns such as address.city. For Excel, the first sheet is read; old .xls files are not supported.

Why did my number or date change after converting?

Types are detected from the values. Turn off "Detect types" to keep everything as text, which also keeps leading zeros in IDs and phone numbers.

Tip: If numbers like 0012 lose their leading zeros in Excel, import the column as text instead of double-clicking the file.
