Test Data for QA and Automation Without Real Customers

Tests are only as good as their data. Here is how QA teams can create it without copying production.

Open the Schema Data Generator

Copying production data into a test system puts personal data in more places than it should be. Hand-made data is too small and too clean. Test data made to match the table gives you volume and shape without the risk.

Paste the CREATE TABLE of the table you test into the Schema Data Generator. It creates up to 500,000 rows that fit each column type and rule, and you can download CSV, JSON, Parquet or Excel. For data that looks like a real file you are allowed to use, the Synthetic Data Generator makes new rows with the same ranges and shares without copying a real row.

Good test data includes the unpleasant cases. Add rows with empty fields, very long text, special characters, boundary numbers and duplicate keys, and check that the system handles them. Keep a small fixed file for quick regression tests and a large one for performance.

Be careful with claims. Generated data is not production data, and it will not reproduce real distributions or relationships unless you use the synthetic tool on a real sample. Check privacy rules before you give any real sample to any tool.

How to use the Schema Data Generator: step by step

  1. Paste your CREATE TABLE into the Schema Data Generator.
  2. Choose the number of rows.
  3. Download CSV or JSON.
  4. Add edge cases by hand and load it into the test system.

When to use the Schema Data Generator

  • Fill a staging database
  • Create a fixed file for regression tests
  • Test imports with edge cases
  • Run a load test with a big file

Example

Input: CREATE TABLE users (id INT PRIMARY KEY, email VARCHAR(100), age INT);

Output: 1, ada.chen7@example.com, 34

Frequently asked questions

Which databases are supported?

CREATE TABLE from PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle and SQLite. Comments, quotes and schema names are handled.

Are foreign keys checked?

No. A foreign key column gets a number from 1 to 100, so load the parent table with ids 1 to 100 first.

Which JSON Schema versions work?

Draft 7 and newer for the common keywords listed above. Unknown keywords are ignored.

Is the data real?

No. It is random and fictional, so it is safe to share.

Tip: Keep one small fixed file for regression tests. Random data changes every run.
