Data Lineage for Finance Reports: Show How a Number Was Made

"Where did this number come from?" is the question every reviewer asks. A record of the steps makes it quick to answer.

Finance and reporting teams clean, join and filter files by hand before a number reaches a report. A month later nobody remembers which rows were removed or which file was joined. The result is a number that cannot be explained.

Data Lineage records the steps you take in Data Utility. When you transform, mask, merge or convert a file, each step is added to the lineage with the row and column counts before and after and what happened to each column. You can see it as a graph and download a report with a checksum of the result file, or a ZIP with the data and the report together.

This helps in two ways. A reviewer can follow the path from the source file to the result and see each change. You can also catch your own mistakes: a step that removed more rows than you expected stands out at once.

Be clear about what it is. It is a record of the steps performed in Data Utility. It does not connect to databases, warehouses or ETL tools, it does not discover lineage automatically, and it is not an audit certificate or a compliance guarantee. Work done outside the tool is not recorded, so keep the original files and write down any manual step.

A good habit is to send the result with its lineage report, and to name files so the origin is clear. Recent files shows a short Made by line for each file. For regulated work, ask your own audit and compliance team what evidence they need.

Frequently asked questions

What is data lineage?

It is the history of a file: where it came from and every step that changed it. Here you can see the input, each transformation with its settings, and the result.

Is there a free data lineage tool?

Yes. Data Utility records lineage as you transform data, shows it as a graph and lets you download it as an HTML report. It is free and needs no account.

Can I share the lineage with the result?

Yes. Click Result + lineage to download a ZIP with your file, a LINEAGE.html report and a lineage.json copy.

Where is the history stored?

Only in your browser, next to your Recent files. It is never uploaded, and deleting a file deletes its history.

Tip: Send the lineage report with the result file, so the reader gets the number and its history together.
